21st ITURBI INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION VALÈNCIA

The Diputació de València jointly with other institutions organizes the 21st ITURBI International Piano Competition València, as a hommage to the great Valencian pianist.

The competition will be from the 23rd of June to the 2nd of July of 2021.

PARTICIPANTS

RULES OF THE COMPETITION

Every pianist from any nationality born on the 23rd of June of 1985 onwards can take part in the competition.

The participation of any candidate who has obtained the first prize in previous editions of the competition will not be accepted.

APPLICATIONS

Form, deadline and place of submission

The applications will be submitted from the 1st of June of 2020 until the 14th of January of 2021.

Filling out the registration form and the submission of the attached documentation (detailed in the following section) will be online on the website www.pianoiturbi.com.

Afterwards, the applications, jointly with the filled out registration form (and not the documentation uploaded at the Iturbi website), will be submitted in one of the following ways:

  1. Following the specified procedure provided on the Diputació de València’s website http://www.sede.dival.es (with electronic certificate and signature), which you can access from the website www.pianoiturbi.com. People who are not Spanish residents can apply to get the electronic certificate issued by the FMNT (Fábrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre) http://www.fnmt.es/en/ceres at their Spanish Consular Offices abroad.
  2. At the General Registry of the Diputació de València (Batlia Palace, Serrans street, no 2, postcode: 46003, València).
  3. At the places indicated by the article 16 of the Ley 39/2015 de 1 de octubre, del Procedimiento Administrativo Común de las Administraciones Públicas.

The registration form will include the title of the pieces to be played in each of the rounds of the competition and approximate duration of each one. In case the program exceeds the permitted duration, the competition’s Advisory Committee will decide which works or pieces should be played. Also, the URL of the recording for the preselection phase will be sent.

Furthermore, it will include a statement of responsibility of the following three requirements to be admitted in the competition:

  1. To not have received lessons by any member of the Jury from one year before the publication of the present call, as well as the compromise of not receiving them between the publication and the beginning of the competition.
  1. The truthfulness of the details given regarding the place and date of the recording sent for the preselection, as well as the identity match of the performer of the recording with the candidate.
  2. Not being under any of the circumstances listed in the article 13.2 of the Law 38/2003, of November 17, General Subsidies, an essential requirement to be beneficiaries of the awards.

Registration price

Due to the COVID pandemic and in order to facilitate participation in 21st ITURBI International Piano Competition València, the organization has decided that participants will not have to pay registration fees.

Attached documentation

The applications will have to attach the documents listed below:

Official certificate in which date of birth and nationality of the participant are stated. Curriculum vitae indicating the academic and artistic certificates, a summary of the musical studies (mentioning the professors), participation in international competitions, most relevant concerts, audio, radio and/or television recordings.

Two recommendation letters by two personalities from the music field, including their contact details (phone number, email, …)

Official or private documents which the candidate considers to be of interest (international awards, critiques, recordings, etc.)

One picture (9 x 11 cm – postcard size) included in the application as an attached document.

Recording: In the enrolment form should include the URL to a video recording of the candidate performing a free program of 20-30 minutes. Such document, recorded in MP4 format (video output MPEG4, Video H264 and audio output AAC/40), preferably in HD, will be uploaded by the candidate from the link placed on the website www.pianoiturbi.com or, alternatively, should be submitted – always jointly with the application – in a format which allows legibility and a projection (memory stick or DVD). Each of the performed works must be recorded in one take without cuts or editions in each one of the works and using one single fixed shot. The recording must have been recorded after the 1st of May of 2020 and under the circumstances of responsibility stated in the application form. It is mandatory that the candidate is physically identifiable in the recording.

In the case that the submission of the application is made without official identity accreditation, the foreign candidates accepted in the competition will have to show proof of identity through any valid means in compliance with the law (valid passport or ID) which, in addition, will allow to link and prove the authorship, property and/or ownership of the submitted documentation.

If falseness of any of the documents provided is confirmed, the admission will be automatically cancelled.

Limitations to the participation in the competition

The candidates who have received lessons as students by any of the members of the Jury a year before the publication of the current call will not be able to participate in the competition.

Processing of personal data

The personal data provided by the participants will be treated exclusively by the Diputació de València with administrative purposes to process the record and the compliance of the public interest, and promotion of the music, the aim of the competition. The right of access, rectification, elimination, opposition, limitation and portability of the personal data, in case it proceeds, can be exercised by sending a request form to the Registro de Entrada (entry register) of the Diputació de València at the address Serrans street, no. 2, postcode 46003 València or on the website https://www.sede.dival.es. All of this, without prejudice of the guarantee of other rights and fulfilment of obligations prescribed in the Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and the Council of the 27th of April of 2016 in relation to the protection of people and processing of personal data and the free movement of personal data by which the Directive 95/46/CE (Data Protection Regulation) is repealed; and in the Organic Law 3/2018, of 5th December, concerning Personal Data Protection and the guarantee of digital rights.

PRESELECTION PHASE

The preselection Jury, in addition to analysing the submitted documentation, will watch the videos sent by the candidates to select the admitted participants. These preselection sessions will be held at the Palau de la Música of València on 25 to 27 of February of 2021 and will be open to the public.

The preselection Jury members, as well as the exact dates of the aforementioned sessions, will be announced in a timely manner on the competition website (www.pianoiturbi.com).

The list of admitted participants in the competition phase will be published on March 15th, 2021 on the competition’s website.

The listed candidates will have to appear in person, for the purpose of reception and identification, on the 22nd of June of 2021 between 5 to 7 pm at the Secretary of the competition at the Centre Cultural la Beneficiència (Corona Street, no 36, València). During the reception, the procedure to accept the grant covering travelling and living expenses will be carried out. It will be subject to the statement of responsibility declaring not being under any of the circumstances laid down in Article 13.2 of the Law 38/2003, of 17th November, General de Subvenciones (General of Grants), and indispensable requisite to be a beneficiary of the awards.

AUDITIONS AND REPERTOIRE OF THE COMPETITION

The competition phase will be held from the 23rd of June to the 2nd of July of 2021.

The competitions will consist of 5 eliminatory rounds: First round in which all the listed participants will take part, Second round and, Semifinal, and two Final rounds.

Along the different rounds, the pieces listed below must be included. Participants can freely decide which ones will be performed in each round (except for the preselection).

  • a)  One sonata by Beethoven
  • b)  One sonata by Mozart
  • c)  Two short pieces by Chopin, having one of them to obligatory be a nocturn.
  • d)  One piece of the Goyescas by E. Granados, for the Suite Iberia by I. Albéniz, or the
    Fantasía Bética by M. De Falla.

Participants cannot repeat pieces during the competition.

First round: 22 participants

30 minutes concert. Free program.

As a contribution to the travelling and living expenses, the Diputació de València will give to each of the participants a 400 Euros grant.

All the participants will get a certificate of participation.

Second round: 16 participants

A concert of 30 – 45 minutes in which it will be mandatory to play a piece of contrapuntal characteristics: Preludes and Fugues from the Well-Tempered Clavier by Bach, Preludes and fugues by Shostakovich, Ludus Tonalis by Hindemith, Preludes and Fugues by Mendelssohn, Bach-Busoni, Bach-Liszt, etc.

The programme of this concert will be completed freely with a duration of a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 45 minutes.

Semifinal: 10 participants

60 minutes concert. The program will be of contestant’s choice in which a work commissioned to Óscar Colomina for the XXI International ITURBI Piano Competition of València must be included. This piece will be available for the participants from the 1st of February of 2021. The estimated length of the piece by Óscar Colomina is between 5 to 10 minutes approximately.

As a contribution to the travelling and living expenses the Diputació de València will give a 100 Euros grant to each semifinalist participant, subject to the statement of responsibility of not being incurred in any of the circumstances laid down in Article 13.2 of the Ley 38/2003, de 17 de noviembre, General de Subvenciones (General Law of Grants), and the acceptance of the grant.

Final I: 6 participants

Performing one out of five concerts for piano and orchestra by Beethoven.

Final II: 3 participants

Performing a concert for piano and orchestra among the followings:

  •  Chopin: Concertos no. 1 y no. 2.
  •  Liszt: Concertos no. 1 y no. 2.
  •  Schumann: Concerto in A Minor.
  •  Brahms: Concertos no. 1 y no. 2.
  •  Tchaikovsky: Concerto no. 1 in B Flat Minor.
  •  Saint-Saëns: Concertos no. 2 in G Minor and no. 5 in F Major.
  •  Prokófiev: Concertos no. 2 y no. 3.
  •  Ravel: Concerto in G Major and Concert for the Left Hand.
  •  Rachmaninov: Concertos no. 1, no. 2, no. 3 and Variations on a theme by Paganini.
  •  Britten: Concerto op. 13.
  •  Strauss: Burlesque.
  •  Bartok: Concertos no. 2 y no. 3.
  •  Joaquín Rodrigo: Concierto heroico.
  •  Manuel Palau: Concierto dramático.

    Only the changes requested to the program until the 1st of March of 2021 will be admitted, and under no circumstance can be modified after being printed.

    JURY AND ASSESSMENT CRITERIA
    The Jury will be assigned by the Diputació de València, and it will be composed of prestigious Spanish and international music performers.

The assessment criteria are the cultural impact that, according to the Jury, the performance and the performer may have in the musical context, both at the Comunidad Valenciana and in the field of music in general. For that, the Jury will make assessments based on artistic and performing criteria regarding parameters of pianistic performance, taking into account the adequacy of this performance concerning the chosen repertoire by each participant, as well as the mandatory piece composed by Óscar Colomina for this edition.

Once the competition starts, the Jury will resolve any incident that may occur regarding the interpretation of these Competition Rules. The decisions by the Jury, as well as the award winner, will be non-appealable decisions.

In case of doubt in the interpretations of the present Competition Rules, the text in Spanish will be valid.

AWARDS

First prize 30.000 Euros. Recording of a CD.
Second prize: 20.000 Euros.
Third prize: 10.000 Euros.

Prize for the finalists (not listed for the Final II): 5.000 Euros. Special prize best performer of Spanish music: 2.000 Euros.

If the Jury decides to give the award ex aequo, the amount of the prize will be divided into the awarded contestants. The first prize cannot be given ex aequo.

Apart from these, other awards funded by sponsors and collaborating entities may be awarded.

Before awarding the prizes, the procedure for the acceptance of the awards will be carried out. It will be subject to the statement of responsibility of not being incurred in any of the circumstances laid down in Article 13.2 of the Law 38/2003, of 17th November, General de Subvenciones (General of Grants). The payment of the prizes will be through bank transfer to the bank account provided by the awarded participants.

These prizes are under the current taxes applied by the Government at the moment they are accepted.

AWARDS CEREMONY

The ceremony will be held on the 3rd of July of 2021, during a concert with the mandatory participation of all the contestants of the Final II, this is to say the finalists awarded with the three first prizes.

They will perform a piece, among the ones played during the different rounds of the competition, which will be chosen by the Direction of the competition.

GENERAL OBSERVATIONS

All the pieces will be performed by heart, except for the piece by Óscar Colomina, which can be played with or without sheet music.

Any of the prizes indicated in the present Competition Rules may not be given, being declared null and void.

Lots will be drawn to decide the order of the participants’ performances. The drawing will be carried out on the 2nd of June of 2021 at the headquarters of the Diputació de València.

The XXI International ITURBI Piano Competition of València, reserves the rights of broadcasting, and audio and video recording rights, as well as the rights of the recording of the CD/DVD by the winner of the competition.

Additionally, the Diputació de València will organize concerts in Spain and other foreign countries during 2022 with the winners of the first, second and third prizes.

The participation in the International ITURBI Piano Competition of València implies the acceptance of the present Competition Rules.

In accordance with Articles 18 of the Law 38/2003, of 17th November, General of Grants and 8.c) of the Law 19/2013, of 9th December, of transparency, access to public information and good governance, the Diputació de València will forward to the Base de Datos Nacional de Subvenciones ( National Subsidies Database) all the information regarding the competition’s call and the resolution of the prizes awarded, in addition to its publication in the Boletín Oficial de la Provincia de València (Official Gazette of the Province of València) and accessibility to the information on the website www.pianoiturbi.com
