1. The 26th Rina Sala Gallo International Piano Competition will be held in Monza at Teatro Manzoni from September 27th to October 3rd 2020.
2. The Competition is open to pianists of all nationalities who are born after October 3rd 1989.
3. Current pupils of any Member of the Jury are excluded from any participation in the Competition. Participants who have been pupils of any Member of the Jury within the two years before January 2018 are also excluded from any participation. This rule does not apply in the case of occasional masterclasses.
4. The public eliminatory will be preceded by a preselection process, based on the evaluation of video material submitted by the candidates (see 7/c.). A maximum of 30 competitors will participate in the First Round; no more than 12 competitors will be selected for the Second Round, no more than 6 for the Third Round and 3 will be selected for the Final.
5. All participants admitted to the Competition will be provided, if they so wish, with free accommodation in a host family, as well as piano- practice facilities for the whole duration of their participation in the competition. They must be available to take part in side events of the competition. Persons accompanying the participants will need to make their own accommodation arrangements.
6. The first prize cannot be awarded ex-aequo.

Applications

7. Registration can only be submitted online between February 1st and April 30th, 2020, via the www.concorsosalagallo.it website. The registration process is explained in details on the website’s “Application” page, starting from Febraury 1st, 2020.
In order to proceed with the online registration, please make sure that you:

b. Have a recent photo of you (jpg format, preferably 2MB or more) and a scan (jpg or pdf) of your identity document or passport.
c. Have a video of your preselection repertoire (see ‘Preselection programme’),
performed without interruption, with the date and time visible. The preferred format must be MOV, H.264, Audio ACC 48kHz, 2GB maximum. Your hands and face must be visible, and the filming angle fixed. The candidate’s name or other textual elements (such as the title, graphics or animation) must never appear on the video.

The video must be sent via WeTransfer (www.wetransfer.com) in the following way:

The notification of successful download sent by Wetransfer is valid as a confirmation of correct sending and receiving of the video. The performance must be made without any audience.
8. The selected candidates will receive a confirmation email by May 31st, 2020. The admitted candidates will be notified of the access credentials to the web site where they must complete by 10 July their registration, providing for the payment of €100 which is non-refundable. The registration must be completed with the chosen program and a curriculum of no more than 120 words or 800 characters, with the name of the last two teachers.
9. Admitted candidates will need to present themselves for registration at the Teatro Manzoni in Monza on September 26th 2020 between 9am and 5:30pm, and also for the order of the performance running order. Those who could not be present and has given an advance warning, and a valid reason, such as accident or illness, he/she may still be admitted by a Jury decision, and will perform in the 1st Round in the order decided by the Jury.
10. The Competition is open to the public during all the Rounds and, during the Final Round, the audience may award a scholarship by voting for its favourite Finalist.
11. Participation in the Competition signifies the acceptance by the contestant
of all the competition rules and regulations, and of the decisions of the Jury that are final. The original Italian version of these rules governs all eventualities and potential disputes. By participating in the Competition, the candidate agrees to allow a full or partial audio/video recording to be made of every performance. The participant also grants the Competition organizers full rights to use such recordings and/or extracts thereof, including the one submitted by the candidate, for all media broadcasts. These rights shall be granted free of charge as a condition of participating in the Competition.

Preselection programme

12. The program must consist of:
a. A Prelude and Fugue from the Well-Tempered Clavier by Johann Sebastian Bach, or three movements from any Suite or Partita by J. S. Bach, or three movements from the Suite in D minor HWV 437 by Georg Friedrich Händel.
b. A Chopin Étude
c. A virtuoso Étude by Bartók, Godowsky, Ligeti, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Prokofieff, Rachmaninoff, Schumann, Scriabin, or Stravinsky.
d. A performance of solo piano music of no longer than 5 minutes’ duration,
composed after 1900.

Repertoire requirements

13. First Round (September 27th- 28th)
A program of no more than 30 minutes’ duration, consisting of:
a) A Sonata by Mozart or Haydn
b) Chopin: One work from the following: Ballades, Scherzos, Barcarolle, Polonaise Op. 44, Polonaise-Fantaisie op.61, Fantaisie Op. 49.
14. Second Round (September 29th — 30th )
A program of no more than 50 minutes’ duration, consisting of:
Beethoven: One Sonata from the following:
Op. 2 No.3, Op. 7, Op. 10 No. 3, Op. 13, Op. 26, Op. 27 No. 1, Op. 31 Nos. 1, 2, 3, Op. 101, Op. 109, Op. 110
One work from the following:
Schubert: All the Sonatas (except D845 and D960), Wanderer Fantasy Op. 15
Chopin: Sonatas
Liszt: Sonata in B minor
Schumann: Sonatas, Carnaval Op. 9, Kreisleriana Op.16, Fantasy Op. 17, Études symphoniques Op. 13, Humoreske Op.20, Davidsbündlertänze Op. 6
Brahms: Sonatas, Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Händel, Variations on a Theme by Paganini (Books I or II)
15. Third Round (October 1st)
A free recital program of between 50 and 60 minutes’ duration which does not
include any piece already presented in the preceding Rounds. However, a piece composed after 1950 must be included. The candidates wishing to compete for the Bach Prize must present an original work or transcription by J. S. Bach.
16. Final Round (October 3rd)
One concerto chosen by the applicant from the following:
