VIOLIN

General Rules

  • A jury of worldwide renowned musicians will be present throughout the competition. The names of the jury members will be announced on the website a few weeks before the start of the competition.
  • A secretary of the jury will also be present at all events. In case of a tie, a casting vote will be given to the president of the jury.
  • The organizers will in no way be held responsible for the absence of a member of the jury, whatever the cause. Nevertheless, they will undertake, if possible, to provide a replacement.
  • The jury’s decisions cannot be changed.
  • By entering the contest, the contestant accepts without reservation that the organizers use photos orvideos of the contestant for purposes related to the contest.
  • Jury members who are parents (up to 3rd degree) or teacher of a candidate will not be allowed to vote for the participant.
  • The organizers of the competition might have to cut some performances if necessary, to maintain a decent schedule for the jury during the week of semi-finals and finals in Liège.
  • The competition is divided into two parts: 1. Violin — 2. Chamber Music.
    1) Violin: The competition is open to all violinists of all nationalities. Candidates must register in one of the three age categories.The program must be interpreted by memory at all levels of the competition (except for sonatas).2) Chamber Music: The competition is open to all instrumental ensembles, ranging from duet to octet, all nationalities combined (singers are not admitted).For chamber music only, the interpretation may be done with music scores.

The competition is open to all violinists of all nationalities. For the violin competition, the contestants must register in one of the following categories.

• Category A: For participants of 11 years old or less at the time of competition (10th of July 2021).

• Category B: For participants of 17 years old or less at the time of competition (10th of July 2021).

• Category C: For participants of 33 years old or less at the time of competition (10th of July 2021.

Preselections and videos by YouTube links

A preselection session of video recordings will help the jury to select participants for the 2nd ROUND of the competition. The chosen contestants (violin and chamber music) will be notified by an official email from the YIMC organization and will have their names appear on the website on Friday May 21st, 2021.

An international jury of the Competition will make this selection, based on the videos submitted by the candidates.

Candidates who are accepted for 2nd round will be informed individually of the results by e-mail on May 21th 2021 at the latest.

Each piece must be recorded in a single audio take (no editing), at the same place and same time, without any cuts. The camera must be placed in front of the musician(s) for a clear vision of the hands and complete body of the violinists/chamber musicians. The video recordings should be recent and of good quality (not necessary in a studio), on a fixed angle.

For violinists of all categories, the program must be played by memory at all levels of the competition (except for piano sonatas).

Candidates must register via the application form available on www.ysaye-competition.com and send their YouTube links by email at the following address: ysayecompetition@gmail.com.

• Category A:

1st ROUND YouTube links preselections (Sunday April 25th the LATEST) : a) One study or caprice for solo violin, free choice.
b) One virtuoso piece for solo violin or with accompaniment, free choice. NB : no 2nd Round for Category A

FINAL Round YouTube links (Monday June 21st the LATEST) :

a) One study or caprice for solo violin, free choice.

b) One virtuoso piece for solo violin or with accompaniment, free choice.

The program must be different than 1st ROUND preselections.

• Category B:

1st ROUND YouTube links preselections (Sunday April 25th the LATEST):

a) 2 movements, one slow and one fast, from one of the 6 Sonatas and Partitas (BWV S.1001 to S.1006) for solo violin of J.S. Bach (without repeats).

b) One virtuoso piece, free choice.

2nd Round YouTube links (Monday June 21st the LATEST) :

a) One classical sonata for violin and piano, free choice.

b) One Caprice for solo violin of H. Wieniawski or N. Paganini (the same piece may not be played in 1st ROUND)

3rd ROUND FINAL Round YouTube links (Monday June 21st the LATEST) :

a) Piece of own choice by E. Chausson, F. Kreisler, N. Paganini, M. Ravel, C. Saint-Saens, P. De Sarasate, P. Tchaikovsky, H. Vieuxtemps, F. Waxman, H. Wieniawski or E. Ysaÿe.

b) One first movement of concerto with cadenza by L. Van Beethoven, J. Brahms, M. Bruch, A. Dvorak, A. Khachaturian, F. Mendelssohn, N. Paganini, S. Prokofiev, C. Saint-Saens, J. Sibelius, Szymanowski, P. Tchaikovsky, H. Vieuxtemps or H. Wieniawski with piano accompaniment.

• Category C:

1st ROUND YouTube links preselections (Sunday April 25th the LATEST):

a) 2 movements, one slow and one fast, from one of the 3 Sonatas of J. S. Bach or Ciaccona from partita n°2 (S.1004) (without repeats).
b) One Caprice for solo violin of N. Paganini op.1.
2nd Round YouTube links (Monday June 21st the LATEST) :

a) One Caprice for solo violin by N. Paganini op.1. (different caprice from 1st ROUND preselection)

b) A virtuoso piece of own choice by E. Chausson, F. Kreisler, E. Zimbalist, N. Paganini, M. Ravel, C. Saint-Saens, P. de Sarasate, P. Tchaikovsky, F. Waxman, H. Wieniawski or E. Ysaÿe.

c) Performance of the first movement of a W. A. Mozart’s Concerto chosen from following: K216, K218, K219 with cadenza with piano accompaniment.

3rd ROUND FINAL Round YouTube links (Monday June 21st the LATEST) :

a) A sonata by L. Van Beethoven, F. Schubert or J. Brahms.
b) A Sonata for solo violin by E. Ysaÿe.
c) A first movement of concerto by L. Van Beethoven, J. Brahms, M. Bruch, A. Dvorak, F. Mendelssohn, N. Paganini, C. Saint-Saens, J. Sibelius, P. Tchaikovsky or H. Wieniawski (n°1), A. Khachaturian, D. Schostakovich with piano accompaniment.

The Ysaye International Music Competition ONLINE 2021 will take place

– in MAY 2021 for preselections (Deadline April 25th 2021)

– 2nd ROUND & 3rd ROUND FINAL from the July 5th to 10th , 2021 ONLINE for all candidates.

The jury will be live (YouTube Channel and Facebook) from the University of Liege — Place du 20 Aout 7 — 4000 Liege, Belgium.

Registration deadline is on Sunday April 25th 2021.

Application for the contestants will be validated only after reception of:

  • copy of their valid Id/Passport
  • the registration form
  • registration fees
  • proof of bank transfer
  • an artistic picture
  • short biography (max 500 characters).
