Competition structure: elimination round, semifinal and final

From this year the International Chamber Music Competition will carry out preselection by video recording, as follows:

2022

  • APPLICATIONS: entrants must send their application, together with their video, by and no later than 31 January 2022
  • PRESELECTION BY VIDEO: 25 ensembles will chosen from the applicants by the jury: results will be communicated by 13 March 2022.

2023

  • COMPETITION ROUNDS:

– 6 – 11 March, Pinerolo (To): Elimination round and semifinals (Patrizia Cerutti Bresso Hall)
– 12 March, Turin: Final (Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi Concert Hall)
            – 12 March, Turin: Winners’ Concert (Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi Concert Hall, 8.30 pm)

Should the pandemic emergency continue into 2023, making it impossible to conduct the live competition rounds on the dates planned, the organizing committee will make the decision either to postpone the competition or to conduct it online.

As is our custom, the elimination round and the semifinals of the Competition will be held in the concert hall of the Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo and will be open to the public (free admission, from 9 am – 1 pm / 2 pm – 7 pm), offering them an opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the competition, unique in its vibrant energy and emotion, as well as the chance to hear live performances from some of the most talented young musicians on the international music scene.

The final of the 2021 competition, a concert in which the 6 finalist ensembles performed, the closing celebrations and the prize-giving were held in the prestigious Concert Hall of the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatoire of Turin. To facilitate transfers from Pinerolo we provided a free shuttle bus with seat reservation.

INFORMATION

Art. 1 – PRESELECTION BY VIDEO IN 2022 AND LIVE ROUNDS IN 2023

From this year the competition will carry out preselection by video recording, as follows:

2022

    The Artistic Committee may at any time nominate new members to join the Jury.Art. 3 – REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRYThe Competition is dedicated to Chamber Music (Piano Duo, Piano Trio, Quartet, Quintet and Sextet) for ensembles where the average age of members is not over 33 on 01/03/2023. The following groups are eligible to enter:
  • Duo (piano for 4 hands; violin and piano; viola and piano; cello and piano; clarinet and piano)
  • Trio (violin, cello and piano; clarinet, cello and piano)
  • Quartet (violin, viola, cello and piano; two violins, viola and cello)
  • Quintet (two violins, viola, cello and piano; clarinet, two violins, viola and cello; two violins, two violasand cello)
  • Sextet (two violins, two violas and two cellos).

After the video pre-selection 25 ensembles will be admitted to the live competition rounds. A list of reserves (from 5 to 8 ensembles) will be set up in case one or more of the selected groups is unable to take part in the live rounds.
NB: the ensembles selected in 2022 MUST compete in the live Competition in 2023 with the same members. NO CHANGE can be made to the formation of the group for the live rounds in 2023.

Art. 4 – ENTRY/JURY RESTRICTIONS

Participants who are related to or who have close ties with any of the Jury members may not take part in the Competition. If a participant has an on-going teaching relationship with a Jury member (or has had in the two years prior to the competition) the Jury member will abstain from voting. When the Jury is sworn in, each member will present a declaration stating his/her personal relations with the participants.

PRESELECTION 2022

Art. 5 – CONDITIONS FOR APPLICATIONS

By completing and submitting the Competition entry form, participants agree to accept all the regulations of the Competition. Applications must arrive by January 31, 2022, and should be sent by email to segreteria@accademiadimusica.it
The Artistic Committee reserves the right to accept entries arriving after that date at its own discretion.

Art. 6 – APPLICATION PROCESS

The application form must be accompanied by:

  • copy of ID card or passport of each member
  • proof of payment of entry fee
  • signed release form consenting to the use of photos and videos
  • signed form consenting to privacy policy
  • CV/resumé (not more than 1,500 characters, spaces included, in continuous writing) in Italian or English;brief CV/resumé (not more than 300 characters, spaces included) in Italian or English
  • the programme (composer, title, key, opus number, duration) selected for the different rounds of thecompetition
  • at least one photograph of the group (or of each individual member) in jpg horizontal format, in colour, inhigh resolution suitable for reproduction and preferably taken during a performance
  • name of member representing the group
  • link and password for video uploaded on youtube.The video must have been recorded expressly and exclusively for this competition.INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING AND UPLOADING YOUR VIDEO:
  1. Download and print the competition flyer that you will find on our website, in the section HOW TO ENTER.
  2. Check that the framed image is fixed and horizontal and that it includes all members of the group.
  3. Make sure that the lighting is adequate for the space you are filming.
  4. Start the video recording with a shot of the flyer you printed.
  5. Begin your performance.
  6. The video must be a continuous live recording. NO EDITING allowed.
  7. Ensure that the audio is of the highest quality possible.
  8. Upload your video on Youtube / Vimeo, or on other platforms, as protected content.
  9. Save the link and password, as this information must be included in your application.

Art. 7 – ENTRY FEE

PRESELECTION 2022

Entry fee: € 50.00 for each member of the group, payable by 31/1/2022.
The entry fee is NOT refundable, with the exception of the cases listed in these Regulations.

Art. 8 – PROGRAMME

The preselection programme must consist of a composition by Johannes Brahms or Robert Schumann.

Art. 9 – PRESELECTION JUDGING AND POSTING OF RESULTS

The Artistic Director will take part in the Jury vote, if a member of the Jury must be excluded. (see art. 4). Each jury member will have three possible ways to express their judgement: ADMITTED – NOT ADMITTED – RESERVE. Each jury member will make their assessment, which will then be combined with those of the other members in order to draw up a ranking list. The top 25 ensembles will be admitted to the live competition rounds in 2023. The following 5 – 8 groups will be placed on a list of reserves, in case one or more of the first 25 withdraws from the competition.

COMPETITION ROUNDS IN 2023

Art. 10 – CONFIRMATION OF PARTECIPATION

Within one month of the posting of the preselection results the ensembles selected in 2022 must confirm their intention to take part in the live competition rounds in 2023 by email, sent to segreteria@accademiadimusica.it
Participants coming from non-EU countries are advised to apply for a visa well before their travel dates.

Art. 11 – ENTRANCE FEE

LIVE COMPETITION ROUNDS IN 2023

The 25 ensembles admitted to the subsequent competition rounds must pay an entry fee of €60.00 for each member, payable within one month of being informed of their selection.

Art. 12 – ROLL-CALL AND ORDER OF PERFORMANCE

The order of appearance for the different rounds shall be determined by drawing a letter from the alphabet at random and then proceeding in alphabetical order. The competition schedule will be posted at the school and sent to all participants through an email to the representative member of all groups. Any group absent when the roll-call is carried out will be excluded from the competition, except in the case where the late arrival is the result of proven “force majeure”, and provided that the first round has not already been completed. The participants absent at the roll-call for justified reasons of “force majeure” must give their first-round performance at the end of the calendar day.

Participants must present a document proving identity.

Art. 13 – CONFIRMATION /VARIATION OF MUSIC PROGRAMME

The music performed must be published, original pieces. Any changes to the programme indicated on the application form must be reported before the start of the round.
At the start of each audition entrants must provide the Jury with a copy of the pieces they intend to perform in the edition they will be using.

Art. 14 – PIANOS AND ROOMS AVAILABLE FOR PRACTICE

An adequate number of pianos and practice rooms will be made available to contestants so they can practise during the Competition. The pianos to be used for the final round performances will be available to participants for practice as needed, with a schedule fixed by the Office based on requests submitted.

Art. 15 – PROGRAMME OF COMPETITION ROUNDS

First round

Free programme.
Duration: minimum 20 minutes, maximum 35 minutes.

Semi-final

A maximum of 12 groups will be admitted.
A composition by Johannes Brahms or Robert Schumann.

Final

A maximum of 5 groups will be admitted.
Programme with a minimum duration of 50 minutes and maximum of 70 minutes, including at least one piece by a composer from the classical-romantic period and one piece by a modern-contemporary composer (composed after 1900).
No composition already played during the preliminary rounds may be repeated in the final round.

Audience Prize

When confirming their intention to take part, all ensembles selected for the three rounds must indicate a piece (min. 10, max. 15 minutes’ duration) which they will play on the evening of March 12, 2023 at 8.30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of Turin Conservatoire “Giuseppe Verdi”, for the awarding of the Audience Prize. (A composition already played during the rounds may be repeated).

The “Pinerolo e Torino – Città Metropolitana”  International Chamber Music Competition forms part of the World Federation of International Music Competitions of Geneva, which is itself a member of the International Music Council (UNESCO).

The Competition is intended to assist the contestants in their future careers, by allowing them to perform in front of a jury of world renowned musicians, awarding money prizes that can help finance their future music training, and offering them the opportunity to perform in prestigious venues. The competition can, therefore, represent a milestone in their careers and in their artistic development.

Money prizes will be awarded to the contestants ranked in the first five. There will also be a special prize for the best performance of a composition by Schumann or Brahms, as well as the much appreciated audience award. The name of one of the members of the audience who has voted for this award will be drawn at random: their prize will be 200 € for a trip.
