RULES
1. The competition presents three levels and is open to the pianists born after January 2001.
2. Programs must cover the piano repertoire from 1900 to today.
3. Each candidate presents his or her program during one single round.
4. Special Prizes are optional. The mandatory piece composed by Christian Mason is compulsory.
5. Prizes as well as Special Prizes will be awarded by the jury
6. The jury’s decisions will be based on the excellence of the interpretation, as well as on the choice and originality of the program. All jury decisions are final and will not be discussed.
7. Playing by heart is not compulsory.
8. Each applicant will be notified by email of his or her acceptance or non acceptance as a competitor. If accepted, a convocation letter will be sent from March 11th , 2019.
Pieces for prepared piano and with electroacoustic devices are allowed. All styles are welcomed, and it is possible to present extracts of the pieces.
The score of the mandatory piece by Christian Mason will be available from September 2018.
Program
1ST LEVEL : between 7 and 12 minutes
• The mandatory piece by Christian Mason, Dawn (1st level), 3 minutes
• A piece by György Kurtág chosen among the volumes 1, 2, 3 of Játékok
• The rest of the program is up to the candidate who can choose one or several pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries’ repertoire.
• One or several Special Prizes — which are optional — can be included in the program. (Improvisation, Jolivet, Denisov, Bettinelli – see p.6 &7)
2ND LEVEL : between 12 and 20 minutes
• The mandatory piece by Christian Mason, Midday (2nd level), 4 minutes
• A piece by György Kurtág chosen among the volumes 3 and 5 of Játékok
• The rest of the program is up to the candidate who can choose one or several pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries’ repertoire.
• One or several Special Prizes — which are optional — can be included in the program. (Improvisation, Jolivet, Denisov, Bettinelli – see p.6 & 7)
3RD LEVEL : between 18 and 25 minutes
• The mandatory piece by Christian Mason, Dusk (3rd level), 5 minutes
• One or several pieces from the following composers: Webern, Schönberg, Bartók, Debussy, Janáček, Dutilleux, Messiaen, Berio, Kurtág, Ligeti.
• The rest of the program is up to the candidate, who can choose one or several pieces from the 20th and 21st centuries’ repertoire, but must include at least one piece written after 1960.
• One or several Special Prizes — which are optional — can be included in the program. (Improvisation, Jolivet, Wirén, Denisov, Bettinelli – see p.6 & 7)
FINAL CONCERT & AWARD CEREMONY: April 14th, 2019
On April 14th, 2019 at 3.00pm (Salle de l’Institut), laureates will present the best pieces of their programme during the final concert which will be followed by the Award ceremony
PROGRAMS CHOICE
We recommend the candidates to review “10 ans avec le piano,” published by Cité de la musique, which provides pieces of the 20th century, organized by levels of difficulty, as well as “Bonjour, Piano! – Pieces by French Composers in Progressive Order” (Editions Durand). Each publisher has its own catalog available upon request or online. A list of composers as well as a list of suggested pieces are available to the participants upon request to Orléans Concours International (info@oci-piano.fr) and on our website (www.oci-piano.com).

PRIZES
Every candidates will receive a diploma of participation.
The jury will award for each level a First Prize (ex-aequo prizes are possible):
1st level : 300 euros – 2nd level : 400 euros – 3rd level : 500 euros.
The jury will also award for each level, Excellence Prizes (2nd Prize) and Encouragement Prizes for a global amount of 2 000 euros.
For each level of the competition, a Prize will be awarded to the best interpretation of the mandatory piece commissioned by OCI to the English composer Christian Mason, for a global amount of 450 Euros.1st level : 100 euros – 2nd level : 150 euros – 3rd level : 200 euros.
Other prizes will include gift cards, music scores, CDs, DVDs, books… which will be offered to the laureates by our generous partners. Several artistic experiences and concert invitations are also proposed to the laureates of the competition.
Special Prizes
The competition presents also optional Special Prizes that candidates could include in their program. They are: Improvisation Prize – André Jolivet Prize – Dag Wirén Prize (3rd level only) – Bruno Bettinelli Prize – Edison Denisov Prize.
• IMPROVISATION PRIZE: Prize offered by the Rotary Club d’Orléans, amounting to a total of 300 euros and shared between the 3 levels. The improvisation may be based on a short musical theme, or may be in the style of another composer. The use of a chord sequence or modal scale is also welcomed. The material used can either be classical or refer to jazz or take inspiration from Játékok’s vocabulary (chords, clusters, glissandos, contrasts, sonorities, architecture).
• ANDRÉ JOLIVET PRIZE: Prize offered by Ms Christine Jolivet-Erlih, amounting to a total of 300 euros and shared between the 3 levels. A tribute Prize to the French composer is offered to the candidates who will present in their programme the following pieces:
• 1st level, Free choice: Berceuse dans un hamac (A. Jolivet) created on June 7th, 1951, or one of the pieces from Chansons naïves (A. Jolivet) created on July 6th, 1952
• 2nd level, Free choice: one of the pieces from Chansons naïves (A. Jolivet) created on July 6th, 1952, or one or several pieces from the Suite Mana (A. Jolivet), 1935
• 3rd level, Free choice: one or several pieces from the Suite Mana (A. Jolivet), 1935 or one piece from Cinq danses rituelles (A. Jolivet), 1939
• DAG WIRÉN PRIZE (3rd level only): Prize offered by the Dag Wirén Foundation, amounting to a total of 300 euros, for the 3rd level only. A tribute Prize to the Swedish composer is offered to the candidates who will present in their programme two pieces from either Opus 19 (Small ironic pieces for piano), Opus 35 (Improvisations for piano) or Opus 43 (A small piano suite).
• EDISON DENISOV PRIZE: Prize offered by Ms Ekaterina Denisova, amounting to a total of 300 euros and shared between the 3 levels. A tribute Prize to the Russian composer is offered to the candidates who will present in their programme the following pieces:
• 1er niveau 1st level: Sept Bagatelles (Editions Peters, Frankfurt)
• 2e niveau 2nd level : Premier Prélude et Pour Daniel OU Premier et Deuxième Préludes (Editions Alphonse Leduc)
• 3e niveau 3rd level : Troisième Prélude (Editions Alphonse Leduc)
The pieces for piano by Edison Denisov are edited by Alphonse Leduc and Breitkopf & Härtel.
• BRUNO BETTINELLI PRIZE: Prize offered by the cultural association Malala and Ms Silvia Bianchera, amounting to a total of 300 euros and shared between the 3 levels.
A tribute Prize to the Italian composer is offered to the candidates who will present in their programme, the following extracts of the work ’Sintesi’:
• 1er niveau 1st level : Monodia
• 2e niveau 2nd level : Preludio / Armonia / Notturno / Polifonia
• 3e niveau 3rd level : Omaggio a Petrassi / Omaggio a Dallapiccola / Capriccio / Toccata
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
APPLICATION PROCEDURES
Online Registration (www.oci-piano.com) until March 4th, 2019
The application form (opposite page) will be available online at www.oci-piano.com and must be sent to the competition’s office and postmarked no later than March 4th, 2019. Along with the completed application form, please submit the following documents preferably by email at info@oci-piano.fr (or by postal mail) :
– A copy of the applicant’s birth certificate or passport,
– A recommendation letter from a teacher or a recognized musician,
– The repertoire list, detailed and precisely timed with the names of the publishers of the selected works, sent by email in .doc format, according to the template available on our website,
– The entire scores of your programme (pdf format),
– One recent colour photo for the Competition Program, preferably by e–mail
(format: jpg / 300 dpi) or by post (size 10,5 x 15 cm),
– A document which confirms the payment of the registration fee,
– The completed and signed parental consent for candidates under 18 years old (see
page 10).
– The authorisation form for the use of the image reproduction right, signed (available on our website www.oci-piano.com)
– The accommodation choice

ACCOMMODATION / TRAVEL ASSISTANCE
Free accomodation in a host family is available for each candidate and one accompanying person (family member of teacher), if requested specifically on the application form. A list of hotels can also be sent on demand (accommodation at your own expense). Also, please feel free to contact OCI team directly with any administrative enquiries such as: visa and/or passport formalities, potential financial support for travel expenses (the candidates who wish to benefit from this aid must include a cover letter explaining their reasons for applying).
