The Leoš Janáček International Competition in Brno (Mezinárodní soutěž Leoše Janáčka v Brně, hereinafter referred to as MSLJ) is a competition named after the famous composer Leoš Janáček. Ten disciplines of string quartet, violin, piano, organ, violoncello, double-bass, flute, clarinet, French horn and tuba take turns regularly in five-year periods.

In 2022 the competition is announced for Piano and Organ. The age limit is 35 (the candidate must not be thirty-six on the first day of the competition).

Application rules:

The electronic application must be printed, signed and sent together with a copy of a confirmation of payment of the administrative fee via e-mail on mslj@jamu.cz (scan form in pdf or jpg) or by post to the address below (decides the date of dispatch of the letter on the postmark). Only electronically filled in application is invalid and cannot be registered if it is not sent with all the attachments in the relevant prescribed form. In addition, the conditions set out above (videorecording) apply for Piano.

Selection round for piano:

A video recording not exceeding 20 minutes must contain:

a) Prelude and Fugue from The Well-Tempered Clavier, BWV846-893 by Johann Sebastian Bach
b) Concert etude by Fryderyk Chopin, Franz Liszt, Sergej Rachmaninov or Alexandr Scriabin
c) Solo piano composition of the candidate‘s choice (own compositions of the competitors and unauthorized transcriptions are not allowed)

PIANO repertoire:
First round:
a) One concert etude by Fryderyk Chopin, Franz Liszt, Sergej Rachmaninov or Alexandr Nikolaevich Scriabin
b) One movement from Sonata by Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven or Jan Ladislav Dusík (Dussek)
The movement must have sonata form and be played without repeats.
c) Leoš Janáček: two parts from the cycle “On an Overgrown Path“ (candidate‘s own choice)

Maximal time of the performance is 25 minutes. Playing by heart is required. The order of the compositions depends on each competitor.

Second round:
Recital in duration of 40–50 minutes. Program must include representative piano compositions from at least three different style periods, including at least one composition by Leoš Janáček from the following selection:

Zdenka Variations
On an Overgrown Path (at least 6 parts chosen by a candidate from Book I or II)
Sonata 1.X.1905
In the Mist

The selection must not include the composition performed in the first round. Playing by heart is required. Own compositions of the competitors and unauthorized transcriptions are not allowed. The recital must be played as a whole, without leaving the stage between compositions. The order of the compositions depends on each competitor. The organizer has the right to ask a competitor for a sheet music of the performed compositions.

Third round:
One of the following compositions for piano and orchestra or chamber ensemble:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Concerto in D minor, KV 466
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Concerto in C major, KV 467
Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto No. 3 in C minor, Op. 37
Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58
Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, Op. 73
Robert Schumann: Concerto in A minor, Op. 54
Frédéric Chopin: Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky: Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23
Antonín Dvořák: Concerto in G minor, Op. 33 (original version)
Edvard Grieg: Concerto in A minor, Op. 16
Leoš Janáček: Concertino
Leoš Janáček: Capriccio “Defiance”
Playing by heart is required. The third round will be held in cooperation with a professional orchestra.

ORGAN repertoire:
First round:max 20 minutes
a) Johann Sebastian Bach: Chorale Trio or 3rd movement of any of the 6 sonatas by Johann Sebastian Bach, BWV 525–530
b) Selection from compositions by French authors of the 17th and 18th centuries
c) Selection from compositions by German authors (Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Adolf Friedrich Hesse, Gustav Adolf Merkel, Josef Gabriel Rheinberger)
Individual parts of the compositions can also be played. The order of the compositions depends on each competitor.

Second round: max 30 minutes
a) Serious composition by Johann Sebastian Bach with a fugue
b) Miloš Štědroň: Passacaglia/Folia (a composition written for the Leoš Janáček InternationalCompetition in Brno)
On request the composition will be sent by email.
c) Selection from compositions by French authors (Marcel Dupré, Maurice Duruflé, Jean Langlais, Jehan Alain, Gaston Litaize, Olivier Messiaen)

Individual parts of the compositions can also be played. The order of the compositions depends on each competitor.

Third round: max 50 minutes
a) Serious composition written between 1840 and 1940
It is obligatory to play the entire composition, not only its parts.
b) Selection of the composition (compositions) according to the candidate’s choice Interpreted compositions from previous rounds must not be repeated.

In this round, the dramaturgical selection will be also evaluated.
Disposition of the instruments will be published on the website of the competition.
