Repertoire:
Each candidate must prepare 2 pieces
– one set piece
– one composition of choice (*)
(*) Considering the short duration of some pieces and the required performance duration, candidates may prepare two compositions of their choice.
For the 3rd, 2nd and 1st divisions, it is preferable that the style of the chosen composition is different from that of the required piece.
For the upper divisions (“Excellence”, “Honor” and “National”), the chosen piece must be of a different period than the set piece.
Required compositions
The list of set pieces will be published at the end of June 2024 on the website www.ugda.lu/ecole-de-musique (Folder Concours Jeunes Solistes).
Compositions of choice
The chosen compositions have to be original works. They must correspond to the level of difficulty and the duration of the performance of the chosen division.
With regard to the level of difficulty of the different divisions, we refer to the Luxembourg music studies program https://portal.education.lu/em/Départements/musique
Performing compositions of European composers – especially Luxembourgish composers- is recommended.
Concerto movements are also accepted.
The organizing committee reserves the right to refuse proposed compositions which do not meet the above criteria.
The duration of the performances (set pieces and chosen compositions, including tuning and rests) is fixed as follows:
3rd and 2nd divisions: 6 to 10 minutes
1st division: 11 to 15 minutes
Divisions “Excellence”, “Honneur” and “Nationale”: 16 to 20 minutes
When selecting their free composition, contestants are required to take the performance duration into account to be able to perform their entire musical program during the contest.
The order of the program can be chosen by the soloist, it is not imperative to play the chosen piece(s) after the set piece.
