Jury

The jury members of each edition are announced each year after the selection of the contestants, in mid-January. Pupils or relatives of the jury members are not allowed to take part in the competition.

More than 200 jury members from 30 countries have selflessly participated in the competition, throughout its history.

Members of the jury are leading figures in their own countries and internationally, with a vast experience as performers, teachers and jury members in other prestigious international competitions.

They are selected by the competitions’ Artistic Director in agreement with the General Manager, representing multiple nationalities and piano schools on the international stage and balanced between members of the francophone, anglophone, German, Asian, East European, Mediterranean as well as local musical traditions.

The competition relies on jury members who, in spite of not being media celebrities, have an outstanding concert career and teaching experience. They must stand out for their personal and human value, for showing empathy and understanding in moments of effort and stress, and for their ability to appreciate the contestants’ musical talent. Every year, a previous winner of the competition is part of the jury.

The Artistic Director of the competition, Mr. Carlos Cebro, is also the President of the Jury.

The scoring system

The scoring system is detailed in the Competition Rules.

The final score is an aggregate of the marks obtained by the contestants in the four rounds. However, a weighting system has been established to give priority to the Second Round mark in relation the First Round mark. The same thing happens with Semifinal and Final.

To obtain the average final score for each contestant in each round, both the highest and the lowest marks will be overlooked.

Voting is secret, but at the end of each round and before deliberations, the marks of the contestants are distributed among the jury members, from the highest to the lowest. Marks are known by the jury, but cannot be assigned to any of its members.

Only the Director and the Secretary of the jury know the marks of the jury members, during deliberations.

In case of a mark differing greatly from the rest, the President of the Jury may ask for a further clarification.
