COMPETITION CATEGORIES AND AGE GROUPS

The competition will be held in three categories:

«Clarinet»

«Bassoon»

«Guitar»

For all categories the competition will take place in two rounds. Categories of the competition are subdivided into two age groups:

First age group: 18-25 years (competitors born on or after October 1, 1994)

Second age group: 26-40 years (competitors born on or after October 1, 1979)

COMPETITION PROCEDURE

All performances are open to the public.

Competitors in each category and age will draw lots to determine the order of performance; this order will be maintained throughout the Competition.

Competition Laureates and Diploma Holders are obliged to participate in the Finale Concerts without remuneration or reimbursement of expenses.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to record and market Competition performances and Finale Concerts in any format without remuneration to the Competitors.

The Organizing Committee reserves the right to publish pictures of participants as well as pictures taken during the Competition in any media related to the Competition.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Applications are to be submitted by August 11, 2019 by

2) Surname, name and academic title of teacher or creative chief, if any;

3) Place of study/work, position;

4) Contact telephone number, e-mail address;

5) Category;

6) Program with the specified duration of each piece;

Application Form must be accompanied by:

— A copy of the passport

— Short biography of the applicant

— Proposed competition repertoire

— Digital photo for publishing purpose (quality no less than 640×480, 0.3 megapixel)

A non-refundable Entrance Fee is 75 EUR for all categories.

JURI

Reiner Wehle

Head of the Jury of Category «Clarinet and Bassoon»

German clarinettist, teacher. Studied the clarinet with Hans Deinzer in Hannover and Guy Deplus in Paris.

He is the winner of numerous international competitions: in Prague, Colmar, Martigny, Toulon, Bonn.

Held engagements in prestigious orchestras including the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and “Lucerne Festival Orchestra”, having played under the direction of Claudio Abbado. Played worldwide with the Trio di Clarone, the Bläserensemble Sabine Meyer, the Ensemble Kontraste and the Trio Integral.

Reiner Wehle has made several CD recordings on the EMI Classics, Thorofon, Ambitus and Novalis labels. He received the “Echo Prize” for the CD of the year twice (1999 and 2000).

Since 1992 he is a professor at the “Musikhochschule Lübeck”. As well as giving a large number of masterclasses (e.g. in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, China, Bulgaria and Israel), he has been a jury member at numerous highly-ranked music competitions.

Nuno Pinto

Clarinettist, Professor of Clarinet and Chamber Music at the Escola Superior de Música e das Artes do Espetáculo of Porto, Featured Artist of the brands Buffet Crampon and Rico.

He studied clarinet with Saul Silva, António Saiote, Arrignon Michel and Alain Damiens in Portugal and France. He dedicated a large part of his work to chamber music and contemporary music, being a founding member of chamber groups “Camerata Senza Misura”, “Trivm de Palhetas e Clarinetes” and others.

As a soloist and part of chamber ensembles, Nuno Pinto gave premieres of more than 120 works by 60 composers and is dedicatee of 23 works. He played as soloist with several orchestras and participated in International Music Festivals in Europe, America and Asia. His discography includes recordings of contemporary music, chamber ensemble, jazz and ethnic music.

Valeriy Altukhov

Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, professor of Kharkiv Kotlyarevsky University of Arts, principal of Kharkiv Special Secondary Music School, Director of Charitable Fund “Music School of the Future”, gifted teacher, musician, widely known public figure.

His initiatives include International Volodymyr Krainev Competition For Yong Pianists, International Bogodar Kotorovych competitions for violinists, festivals “Music Is Our Common House”, “Visiting Ayvasovsky”,  “Visiting Hohol”.

During his pedagogical work he raised around 50 pupils, who won the awards on various competitions more than 30 times.

Holds the award “Honored Citizen of Kharkiv” and Order of Merit of Ukraine of the 3rd degree, was included in “Honored Names of Ukraine – Elite of The State”.

Roman Vovk

Head of Woodwind instruments department of Tchaikovsky National Music Academy of Ukraine, Honoured Art Worker of Ukraine, Ph D., Professor. Graduated from Kyiv Conservatory (class of S. Rygin).

Worked as soloist of symphonic orchestra of Shevchenko Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Member or Head of jury of national and international competitions.

Published more than 40 articles, gas own recordings on Ukrainian radio, CDs and DVDs. Often held master-classes in Ukraine and abroad.

His students won prizes at national and international competitions more than 100 times.

In 1990 gathered Clarinet Quartet “Optimum”, winner of Gran-Prix of international competitions.

Luis Castillo Castillo

Bassoonist, teacher bassoon and chamber music at the conservatories of Cordoba and Seville.

He’s a founding member of chamber music groups “Trio Nikolaus”, the ensemble “Sección Aurea” or the “Subito Ensemble” and he has been member of Cordoba Orchestra and Arsian Orchestra.

Being interested in historical performance, he studied at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague and the Catalonia School of Music and attending master-classes by B. Sela, C. Cristóbal, J. Borràs, W. Verchuren or D. Agrell.

As a historical bassoon player, he has worked with established groups like “Archivo 415”, “Accademia del Piacere” or the “Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla”. Also, he joins new ensembles dedicated to historically informed performance, such as “Musica Mensurabilis”, “Ministerium” or “Quinteto Clásico de Sevilla”.

Being a versatile player, Luis Castillo plays instruments from all periods, including the dulcian, baroque and classical bassoon, a variety of romantic period instruments, as well as the modern ones.

Abadzhan Harriy

People’s Artist of Ukraine, Candidate of Art Criticism, professor, leading teacher of bassoon of Kharkiv University of Arts.

Graduated from Kharkiv Musical College (1961), Kharkiv Institute of Arts (1968), Assistant Internship of Moscow Conservatory (1974). In 1982 presented his dissertation.

Since 1983 till 2017 he was head of Woodwind instruments and conducting Departament. Since 2005 he is vice-rector of studying. He trained more than 20 laureates of national and international competitions.

In 1992 under his guidance Youth symphonic orchestra “Slobozhanskiy” was established, and he became its artistic director.

He is a laureate of prestigious award “Peoples’ recognition” (2006).

JURY EVALUATION

    1. All competitors will perform in the first rounds of the competition, with approximately 2/3 of participants from each age group being invited to perform in a Final Round.
    2. Jury sessions are not open to the public, although the Jury secretary as well the chair of the competition management is allowed to be present at the jury sessions.
    3. Voting is secret. Ballots may not be made public. The result is presented for the jury (if decided by the jury as well to the public after the end of the whole competition) without disclosing the names of the jurors. Only the Jury secretary and chair of the management can see the separate votes of each jury member.
    4. The Jurors will vote independently and it is not permitted for jury members to discuss performances of competitors while they are still participating in the competition.
    5. The vote of a Juror will be taken into account only if he or she has heard all performances of all rounds. The Management of the Competition has the right to make exceptions to this rule.
    6. If a member of the jury, with approval of the Management of the Competition, was not present during the performance(s) of one/several Competitor(s), this member of the jury will henceforward be disqualified regarding this/these Competitor(s).
    7. The ballots must be signed by the Jurors. After each voting the Jury Secretary collects and counts the ballots, ensuring that they are duly signed.
    8. Jurors should avoid any contact to the competitors while they are still participating in the competition, with the exception for the jury member(s) who will not vote for his/her student participating.

 

PROCEDURE OF VOTING.

    1. Jury members shall not rank / vote for competitors who are related to them or who have been studying with them regularly the instrument / voice the competition is held in the 36 months preceding the competition, or have had more than two lessons at master-classes in the 12 months preceding the competition. This or other disqualifying relationships between Jurors and Competitors, be they of a professional or personal nature, will be discussed at the Jury meeting before the competition.
    2. Every Jury Member has to vote the agreed number of votes after each round. Members of the Jury who have one or more pupils among the candidates, or who are otherwise disqualified, can mark a “#” beside the name(s) of this or these candidate(s) – in such case this Jury Member has to put accordingly less “+” votes. Thereafter votes are cast so as to make the total of “#’s” and “+’s” the number of votes required for the round in question.
    3. If a member of the jury does not inform the Management of the COMPETITION about any disqualifying relationship between him/her and a Competitor, this member of the jury can immediately be excluded from the jury.
    1. FIRST ROUND

Approximately 2/3 of participants from each age group being invited to perform in a Final Round. Jury Members should mark “+” (or “#”) to approximately 2/3 of the participants – exact number to be agreed at the Jury Session before the start of voting.

    1. FINAL ROUND

After the final round every jury member ranks the candidates for receiving the prize (Taking into consideration point 5 and 7).

Members of the Jury who have one or more pupils among the candidates – or who are otherwise disqualified – can mark a “#” beside the name(s) of this or these candidate(s). In such case(s) the final sum of votes will be divided by number of voted Jury Members to get the average.

While counting the jury’s voting the secretary and management of the competition will recalculate the ranking into points: 1st – 10 points, 2nd – 8 points, 3rd – 6 points, 4th – 4 points, 5th – 2 points, 6 – 0 points. The candidate with the highest average of points wins.

    1. After the first round the names of the candidates that proceed further are made public in order of appearance, without mention of the number of votes obtained.
    2. At the final concert the names of the Prize winners will be made public, without mention of the number of votes obtained.

 

    1. SPECIAL PRIZES
    2. Special Prizes will be awarded by the decision of the Jury after the last Jury Session.
    3. In the voting for special prizes Jury members are allowed to rank / vote for competitors who are related to them or who have been studying with them regularly in the 36 months preceding the competition, or have had more than one lesson at master-classes in the 12 months preceding the competition.
    4. If decided by the jury the voting results could be released to the public after the whole competition, without disclosing the names of the jurors.
    5. The decision of the Jury is final and cannot be appealed. There is a requirement of confidentiality about all the Jury sessions and proceedings.
    6. In all indecisive situations the vote of the President of the Jury decides. In case the President is disqualified according to point 5 or 7, the Vice-President of the Jury casts the deciding vote.
    7. For the contestants eliminated from participation in the competition the Jury members will be available  for an evaluating meeting with those participants.
    8. The Jury has the right to  shorten the programmes of the participants.
    9. The Jury can interrupt a performance if the allowed time limits are exceeded.
    10. The Jury has the right to require a copy of the scores of music pieces written after 1991.

European Union of Music Competitions for Youth also provides special EMCY prize which is awarded by jury’s decision.

Often EMCY Prize Winners are offered external offers for concerts.

The EMCY Prize winner is in the pool for follow-up promotion as master classes, concerts and performances all over Europe.

Depending on the results achieved by the contestants and within the limits of the set number of prizes the jury is authorized:

─ to withhold prizes;

─ to have performers share prizes;

─ award special prizes.

The Organizing Committee will endeavour to arrange opportunities for the best laureates to perform concerts during the 2019-2020 concert season in Ukraine and abroad.

REPERTOIRE

The order of performance is determined by the participants. In the categories “Clarinet” and “Bassoon” music pieces composed after 1920 can be played with sheet music.
