The 14th International Volodymyr Krainev Competition for Young Pianists will be held in Kharkiv from March 19-27, 2020.
The Competition is open to Pianists of all nationalities who were born on or after March 1, 2001. The next Volodymyr Krainev Competition for Young Pianists is anticipated to take place in 2022.
GENERAL TERMS
COMPETITION CATEGORIES AND AGE GROUPS
The competition will be held in two categories
I. Category “Young Master” (three Round competition – the final Round with orchestral accompaniment).
The category “Young Master” competition is subdivided into 2 age groups:
1. First age group – competitors born on or after March 1, 2005
2. Second age group – competitors born on or after March 1, 2001
II. Category “Debut” (one Round competition)
The category “Debut” competition is subdivided into 3 age groups:
1. First age group – competitors born on or after March 1, 2010
2. Second age group – competitors born on or after March 1, 2008
3. Third age group – competitors born on or after March 1, 2006
COMPETITON PROCEDURE
All performances are open to the public. The order of performance will be in numerical order, the first candidate will be determined by a lottery draw. This order will be maintained throughout the competition. Competition Laureates and Diploma Holders are obliged to participate in the Competition Finale Concerts without remuneration or reimbursement of expenses. The Competition Committee reserves the right to record and market Competition performances and Finale Concerts in any format, present or future, including but not limited to audio, video, digital or other forms of recording, and/or to radio and/or TV broadcasts, as well as commercial release of said recordings/broadcasts without remuneration to the Competitors. The Competition Committee reserves the right to publish pictures of participants as well as pictures taken during the Competition in any media related to the Competition.

The enclosed Application Form must be accompanied by:

a) A copy of the Applicant’s birth certificate;

e) Digital photo for publishing purpose (quality no less than 640×480, 0.3Megapixel)
Applicants will be advised of their acceptance or otherwise on or before February 15, 2020. A non-refundable Entrance Fee is payable at the secretariat of the Competition during the registration. Entrance Fee for participants is: -at the “Young Master” three-round competition 50 Euro, at the “Debut category” competition – 30 Euro.

JURY EVALUATION
The performances will be evaluated by an international jury consisting of outstanding musicians. Jury decisions are final and may not be challenged or amended. Jury members shall not rank / vote for competitors who are related to them or who have been studying with them regularly during 36 months preceding the competition, or have had more than one lesson at master-classes in the period of 12 months preceding the competition. The jury is authorized to interrupt the performances exceeding the time limit or in case it fails to meet the professional demands of the competition.

Category “Debut” (one Round competition)
Winners in the Debut category will be awarded with diplomas and presents. The organizing committee will endeavour to arrange opportunities for the best pianists to perform concerts during the 2020-2021 concert season in Ukraine and abroad.
REPERTOIRE
All works must be performed from memory.
I. Category “Young Master” (three Round competition – the final Round with orchestral accompaniment).
FIRST ROUND

1. A polyphonic piece from the Baroque period.
-
2. A sonata allegro movement from the Classical period.
-
3. An Etude of participant’s choice. The choice of music for the rest of the programme is entirely at the discretion of the competitor within the time allowed for each age group.
SECOND ROUND
-
1. Any piece(s) composed by Fryderyk Chopin or Robert Schumann.

2. A composition from the competitors native country.
The choice of music for the rest of the programme is entirely at the discretion of the competitor within the time allowed for each age group.
The performances for both Round 1 and Round 2 must have the following durations:

THIRD ROUND
First age group
Participants of the 1st age group have to perform 1st or 2nd and 3rd movements of a concerto for piano and orchestra of contestant’s choice from the following:

-Franz Joseph Haydn – Hob. XVIII/11 D-dur.
-Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart- KV 246 C-dur (No. 8), KV 414 A- dur (No. 12), KV 466 d-moll (No. 20), KV 467 C-dur (No. 21), KV 488 A-dur No. 23).
-Ludwig van Beethoven – No. 1 C-dur op. 15; No. 2 B-dur op. 19.
-Felix Mendellsohn – No. 1g-moll op. 25.
-Camille Saint-Saens – No. 2 g-moll op. 22.
THIRD ROUND
Second age group
Participants of the 2nd age group have to perform the whole concert for piano and orchestra of contestant’s choice from the following:
