Master class of Jörg Zwicker (baroque cello, chamber music), Austria

The master class will be held from April 2 in VERE MUSIC HUB (Kyiv, 21/8 Malopidvalna str.). Classes are held without an audience, but students, teachers, and professional musicians are welcome to come and listen to their colleagues.

Repertoire for the master class: baroque suites and sonatas. The master class is open to both soloists and chamber ensembles that include string instruments.

The list of active participants of the master class will be made public, and the schedule of classes will be sent to all registered participants 1-2 days before the master class.

The master class is held with the support of the Austrian Cooperation Office in Lviv and the Ukraine Office of Austria, and with organizational support from OPEN OPERA UKRAINE. The information partner is the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in Ukraine.

The master class is part of the VERE MUSIC ACADEMY program.

Selection of active participants based on videos. The video must be recorded after April 1, 2025. Applications can be sent by March 27, 2026, to academy@vere.fund.

The musicians who will take an active part in the master class, as well as the schedule of classes, will be chosen by the mentor. We will announce this information 1-2 days before the master class.

Jörg Zwicker, born in 1969, studied cello with Hildegund Posch at the University of Graz and viola da gamba with José Vázquez at the University of Vienna. After receiving his concert diploma, he studied and specialized in Baroque cello and practiced historically informed performance at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis (with Christoph Koenig) in Switzerland and at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague in the Netherlands (Jaap ter Linden, Sigiswald Kuijken).

As a private student of Nikolaus Harnoncourt, he founded his first music ensemble, the Early Music Ensemble, called Musica Antiqua Graz, at the age of 16. In 1992, he founded the world-renowned professional Baroque orchestra Capella Leopoldina, with which he has toured throughout the continent. As a cellist and conductor, he has given concerts with various ensembles throughout Europe, the USA, Ukraine, and India. Around 50 CD recordings document his musical activities.

Since 1995 he has been teaching at the University of Music in Graz (cello, baroque cello, chamber music, conducting, and pedagogy) and at the Department of Early Music at the Private University of Vienna (baroque cello, chamber music, baroque orchestra, psychological training). He also gives master classes throughout Europe. Jörg Zwicker is also trained as a mental coach, neuroathletic coach, and bio- and neurofeedback coach.

Based on his own experience of around 40 years on stage, extreme sports, and special education, he trains professional musicians and athletes to peak performance, stage fright, and concentration. In 2015, he published the book “30 Hours of Flow,” in which he recounted his experience of an extreme sporting event after burnout.

Іn 2020, he published his pedagogical edition of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “6 Suites for Cello.”

Austrian Cooperation Office in Lviv was established 1998 as an external part of the Austrian embassy in Ukraine and the OeAD to become a platform for cultural, educational, and scientific cooperation between Austria and Ukraine. The institution supports the presentation of Ukraine as an independent cultural nation by establishing cooperations with artists, cultural workers and scientists who have come to Austria and integrating them into the local cultural and scientific sector. The Ukraine Office Austria is a cooperation between the Austrian Cultural Forum Kyiv and the Austrian Cooperation Office Lviv.

OPEN OPERA UKRAINE is an independent project that shapes a new culture of consumption of musical intellectual products through the implementation of contemporary opera productions, audience development, and the professionalization of young talents.

VERE MUSIC ACADEMY is an ongoing program of master classes by VERE MUSIC FUND. It offers Ukrainian performers access to the best educational practices, for which they used to have to spend a lot of time, effort, and money. But now it is possible to attend master classes by world-renowned teachers and musicians without leaving Ukraine – absolutely free of charge.

VERE MUSIC FUND is a charitable fund established in 2017 by Tetiana Verevska. The Fund provides grants to Ukrainian musicians to participate in international competitions and master classes, and implements festival projects and educational initiatives. It also supports international music competitions in Ukraine.
