The 10th International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart will be held from 31 May to 8 June 2019 in Augsburg. The competition is in honor of Leopold Mozart, who was born in Augsburg and who was an invaluable teacher to his famous son, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The year Wolfgang Amadeus was born, Leopold Mozart published his important Violin School in Augsburg. Thanks to historical performance practice, Leopold Mozart’s Violin School has experienced a renaissance in recent years.
In the spirit of Leopold Mozart it is our vision to establish a close link through the international violin competition to the next generation of violinists. Our heartfelt thanks go to our members and sponsors, whose generosity makes it possible for us to achieve this goal together.
The International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart is not a competition like every other! The upcoming one in 2019 is the tenth and for this jubilee many pivotal new standards have been set. Only 24 candidates will be invited to the competition; active and former students of jury members will not be admitted. Thus, the stringent requirements of the Augsburg competition are emphasized right the outset. In the three condensed competition rounds, participants must master new challenges which have been conceived to exhibit not only musical and technical but also personal competence. In this way the International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart stands out uniquely in contrast to other competitions.

GENERAL REGULATIONS
1. The 10th International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart will take place in Augsburg, Germany from 31 May – 8 June 2019. Augsburg is the birthplace of Leopold Mozart.
2. Violinists of all nationalities born between 8 June 1989 and 30 May 2004 are eligible to participate in the competition.
3. Students, whether current or former, of a member of the jury are not eligible to participate.
4. With his/her signature in the application the participant agrees to the “General Regulations”, the “Conditions for Participation” as well as to the rules set out under “Competition Procedure”. The decisions of the jury are final and incontestable. Legal recourse is excluded.
5. In case of doubt, the German text is valid.
6. The competition is not liable for any damages.
CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION
1. Applications are to be done online.
Online registration as of July 2018.
Application deadline is 7 December 2018.
Late applications will not be accepted.
2. For the online registration please upload the following:
- Digital, clearly identified audiovisual recordings of the pieces required for the pre-selection
- Photocopy of passport or ID card (proof of date and place of birth) for verification of the participant’s identity
- One photo, jpg file, min. resolution 300dpi, not copyrighted
- Brief curriculum vitae with artistic development/career
- Two letters of recommendation from the past two years from current or former teacher(s) or from recognized violinists/musicians
All documents not written in German, English or French must be accompanied by a translation in one of the aforementioned languages.
3. Notification of acceptance to the competition and the score of the commissioned piece will be sent by 9 February.
4. Accepted applicants shall confirm their participation. The confirmation is valid on receipt of the registration fee of € 120.00 (free of charge for the recipient) at the latest 11 March 2019

The registration fee cannot be refunded, should participation be prevented or cancelled.
COMPETITION PROCEDURE
1. All approved candidates are requested to report in person to the competition office, Maximilianstr. 59, 86150 Augsburg, producing a valid passport/identity card or an official document proving date and place of birth, not later than 12 noon on 31 May 2019.
2. On 31 May 2019 at 1:30 pm, the playing order previously determined by drawing lots will be announced. The playing order will remain unchanged until the end of the competition. The jury’s decision about admission to the next round will be announced at the end of each round.
3. The works listed under “Competition Repertoire” are compulsory. The competition repertoire sent with the participant’s application is final. Subsequent changes are not possible.
4. As long as a candidate is actively taking part in the competition, he or she should not leave Augsburg without the understanding of the competition management. All participants in the second round who do not proceed to the finals are required to remain in Augsburg through 6 June 2019. Each participant is obliged to remain free of any professional obligations or concerts throughout the duration of the competition.
5. All competition winners must accept their prizes in person. Winners are committed to perform at the prizewinners’ concerts without fee. The jury and the artistic director decide on the program of both prizewinners’ concerts. In addition, prizewinners are committed to perform without fee at the opening concert of the following International Violin Competition Leopold Mozart.
6. The prizes/prize money, with the exception of the 1st prize, may be divided.
The jury has the option not to award prizes.
The decision of the jury is indisputable.
The legal process is excluded.
7. The winner of the MOZARTPRIZE – 1st Prize agrees to an audio(visual) recording made by the company Evil Penguin Records. Repertoire, recording location and recording dates will be agreed upon by all parties involved. The organizers of the competition in co-operation with Evil Penguin Records are responsible for the production, usage and commercialization of the CD. This includes all means of utilization (audio/-visual data media, print and online media, radio/TV broadcast, online streaming and download). No fee will be paid for the recording, production, utilization and commercialization of the CD and the prize winner assigns all necessary rights to the organizers of the competition free of charge.
8. All participants agree to any audio-visual recording of all public events of the competition. The organizers have the right to exploit these recordings commercially and non-commercially, also through third parties, at any time. This includes all means of exploitation (audio-visual data media, print and online media, radio/TV broadcast, online streaming and download). All participants assign all necessary audiovisual rights to the organizers of the competition free of charge. No fee will be paid for any recording or further use.
9. While in Augsburg, participants must be available at all times for individual marketing and PR activities of the organizer. These will be scheduled locally and in good time.
10. An official piano accompanist is available to the candidate upon request. The candidate’s official accompanist will be assigned when the playing order is established. Candidates wishing to bring their own accompanist may do so at their own expense.
11. Accommodation for participants in private family homes in Augsburg will be provided free of charge. The competition office will provide a list of reasonable hotels for participants, pianists and other accompanying persons – payable by the persons themselves. Travel expenses are not reimbursed by the competition, nor are meals provided
12. Augsburg is located in southern Germany between Munich and Stuttgart. Airports: Munich (approx. 60 minutes) or Stuttgart (approx. 120 minutes). There are regular trains between Munich-Augsburg and Stuttgart-Augsburg. By car: directly on freeway A8.
REPERTOIRE
PRESELECTION
The preselection viewing will take place in the presence of an international jury.
With the application, candidates must include an audiovisual recording, clearly labelled and of good quality.
Each uploaded file must include the candidate’s name, composition title and where and when each recording was made. All the recordings must be less than a year old.
The candidate must be fully visible at all times on the screen. No sound and image processing are allowed.
Each work must be uploaded in a separate file, preferably in MP4 format, no larger than 500 MB.
CHOSEN PROGRAM
In the first and second round participants may choose the sequence of performance themselves with the stipulation that the piano trio work in the second round must always be played first.
Editions: Insofar as they are available, original text editions should be used for all compositions.
With the exceptions of the Chamber Music, the Sonatas for Violin and Piano and the commissioned work by Elzbieta Sikora all works must be performed from memory.
