The Odesa International Violin Competition will be held in Odesa (Ukraine) from 23 to 29 June, 2020 at the Odesa National Music Academy named after A.V. Nezhdanova and the Odesa Philharmonic.

The competition is open to violinists of any country of at least 16 and not more than 28 years of age at the time of the opening of the competition (23 June 2020).

Application

I. The application may be completed in English, Ukrainian or Russian and must include the following documents and materials:
– A copy of passport or birth certificate.
– A copy of the registration fee payment receipt.
– High quality color photos in digital format.
– Artistic biography of the participant.
– A copy of the laureate award of EMCY or WFIMC (if any).
– Link to the video of the qualifying round program

II. All required documents with a properly filled out application and video of the participant must be sent to info@odesacompetition.com by March 31, 2020 at the latest. After the materials have been processed, the candidates will be sent a confirmation that the application has been completed.

III. Documents sent to the competition will not be returned.
IV.Applications submitted without the abovementioned documents or received after 31 March 2020 will not be accepted for consideration.

V. As a result of listening to videos of the participants of the selection round, the special commission will select no more than 24 participants to participate in the first round of the competition.

VI. Participants who will participate in the first round will be announced no later than April 12, 2020.

VII. Simultaneously with the submission of the application, each competitor must pay a registration fee of 100 euro or an amount in Ukrainian Hryvna
equivalent to the indicated amount in Euros according to the National Bank of Ukraine exchange rate on the day of payment. All costs associated with the bank transfer of funds must be borne by the payer. Already paid registration fee cannot be refunded under any conditions.

The competition consists of three rounds.
II. All rounds of the competition are open to the public.
III. The order of performances of the participants in the first round is determined by draw lot and is maintained throughout the competition.
IV. During the competition, the participants are given one rehearsal with the pianist and one rehearsal with the orchestra. Participants can come to the
competition with their own pianist. V. The participants will be given rehearsal classes and acoustic rehearsal time before each round on the stage of the concert hall.
VI. The results of each round of the competition are announced after its completion.
VII. All prize winners must participate in the final gala concert of the competition on June 29, 2020.

I. The jury reserves the right not to award all prizes, but also to split prizes between competitors (except the first prize).
II. A jury member does not have the right to vote for a participant who is or was their student.
III. The jury has the right to stop the participant’s performance if the program executed by them exceeds the time limits.
IV. The vote of the jury chairman, with the same number of points, is casting.
V. The decisions of the jury are final and not subject to appeal.

1 prize — € 3,000 * and violin by Myroslav and Orest Putsentela.
2nd prize — € 2,000 *
3rd prize — EUR 1,000 *
* Prizes are paid in UAH at the NBU rate as of March 31, 2020. According to the legislation of Ukraine, an income tax of 18% and a military levy of 1.5% will be withheld from the amount of remuneration.

– Prize from German manufacturer of strings and accessories «Pirastro».
– Grant for participation in an international master
class or competition from the VERE MUSIC FUND Foundation and others.

Program

Preliminary Round:
1.J.S.Bach — two contrasting movements or Chaconne from Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin, BWV1001- 1006.
2. N. Paganini — one of the caprices of the performer’s choice.
I. Winners of international competitions belonging to EMCY (European Association of Music Competitions for Young Musicians) or WFIMC (World Federation of International Competitions) are allowed to participate without prior video selection. In this case, the application must be accompanied by documents confirming the title of winner of the EMCY or WFIMC.
II. Video requirements:
– High-quality (HD) video must be posted on www.youtube.com and made publicly available to announce the results of the selection round.
– Deleting a competitor’s video will automatically signify their removal from the competition.
– Music works can be recorded separately.
– The video should be shot on one still camera and show the performer life-size.
– Video with poor image and / or audio quality will be rejected.

First round:

(Program performance time should not exceed 30 minutes)
1. J.S. Bach – one of the following works:
– Adagio and Fugue from Sonata for Violin Solo in G Minor, BWV1001,
– Grave and Fugue from Sonata for Violin in B Minor, BWV1003,
– Adagio and Fugue from Sonata for Violin Solo in C Major, BWV1006,
– Chaconne from partita D minor for solo violin, BWV1004.
2. N. Paganini — one of the caprices of the performer’s choice.
3. E. Ysaye — sonata for Violin Solo No. 3 or No. 6, Op.27

Second round:

(Program performance time should not exceed 40
minutes)
1. A compulsory work by a Ukrainian composer specially written for the competition (Duration 5 minutes)

I. The program specified for competitive audition may not be changed after 31 March 2020.
II. The notes of the obligatory work of the Ukrainian composer will be sent to all participants of the competition who have passed the qualifying round before April 12, 2020.
III. All works should be performed by heart, except for the obligatory work of the Ukrainian composer and sonatas in the round two.
IV. Recommended edition for the works of W.A. Mozart, L. Beethoven, F. Schubert and J.S. Bach — Bärenreiter.

The competition reserves the right to photograph, record, shoot, broadcast any part of the competition. All rights, including the further using of the materials, belong to the competition. The competition has no financial obligations to the competitors for the using of the materials received.

Travel and living expenses 

I. The participants and their pianists are responsible for arranging their travel and accommodation at their own expense.
II. Each participant is obliged to declare their instrument to the customs authorities when entering Ukraine. If a competitor is playing on a rented high
value instrument, they must have an appropriate document confirming their right to use it.
