ABOUT COMPETITION.

The competition will be held on 17-25 April 2020, in Vilnius.
The competition is open to pianists and violinists from all countries:

The competition is subdivided into 3 age groups:
“A” – participants born on or after June 19, 2008
“B” – participants born on or after June 19, 2004
“C” – participants born on or after June 19, 2000

REGISTRATION.

  • Participants register ONLINE from 1 November to 1 February 2020 on website https://artistdb.eu/en/a/home
  • During the registration, the applicant must provide a valid YOUTUBE (YOUKU) video link. The link for the pre-selection must contain for A and B group 3 – 8 minutes, C – 10-15 min. recording with pieces from the 1st and from the 2nd rounds. The video must not be edited. The organizers must receive the video link no later than 1 February 2020.
  • During the ONLINE registration, it is necessary to pay the entrance fee, which is not refundable.
  • Participant Fee for A group – 60 Eur, for B – 80 Eur, for C – 100 Eur.
  • Each participant shall prepare a program in accordance with the Competition repertoire. The selected program should be stated in the application form.

AUDITION TO THE COMPETITION.

  • Received applications on 2-4 February 2020 are forwarded to the committee, which consists of the competition management.
  • Candidates are informed about their acceptance until 10th February 2020.
  • The entrance fee will not be refunded to competitors who were accepted (or not accepted) and fail to arrive at the competition.
  • The recordings will be evaluated by the Jury of the 11th National Balys Dvarionas competition for piano and strings.
  • Lithuanian applicants can participate at the 11th International Balys Dvarionas competition on regular basis after the video pre-selection, or subsequent to a successful live performance at the XX National Balys Dvarionas competition receiving a personal invitation from the Jury.
  • Management of the competition intermediates for the participants who need VISA in order to come to Lithuania, but it doesn’t bear any financial responsibility. To receive VISA, please contact in advance (not later than 1-5 May) by e-mail info@ipmc.lt

GENERAL COMPETITION RULES.

  • The performances will be evaluated by an international jury.
  • Each jury for Pianists and for Violinists will include 7 members.
  • The final 3rd round with orchestra in the age group “C” will be adjudicated by all 14 Jury members.
  • The decisions of the jury are final and not subject to appeal.
  • Jury members could stop unprofessional performance.
  • All performances are open to the public.
  • The order of performance in Round 1 and Round 2 of the Competition will be determined by age from the youngest to the oldest participant.
  • The order of performance in Round 3 will be decided by the Organisers together with the orchestra conductor.

Piano:

  1. 1st and 2nd Rounds will take place in The Congress Hall of Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (address: TIlto g. 16);
  2. Final Round will take place at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic with LITHUANIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (Aušros Vartų g. 5);
  3. The possible number of participants in the 2nd Round is no more than half of all participants competing in the 1st Round;
  4. The Final Round will be limited to no more than 3 pianists;
  5.  All repertoire has to be performed from memory.

Violin:

  • 1st and 2nd Rounds will take place in Balys Dvarionas decennary music school (address: T. Kosciuškos g. 13)
  • Final Round will take place at the Lithuanian National Philharmonic with LITHUANIAN NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA (Aušros Vartų g. 5);
  • The possible number of participants in the 2nd Round is no more than half of all participants competing in the 1st Round;
  • The Final Round will be limited to no more than 3 pianists;
  •  All repertoire has to be performed from memory.
  • Travel to and from Vilnius is each competitors responsibility.
  • During all Rounds, the participants pay their own living expenses.
  • The organizing committee will provide for violinists the accompanists – 1 rehearsal and performance on the stage cost 40 Eur.
  • It is forbidden to have contact with the Jury during all the competition. After the announcement of the results, those who did not make it to the next round are welcome to ask the opinion of the Jury.
  • The students of the Jury members can take part in the competition, but those Jury members are not allowed to vote for their students or have an impact on the decisions of other Jury members and their decisions.
  • Piano Competitors must register in person with the Secretariat at the Balys Dvarionas decennary music school (address: T. Kosciuškos g. 13)
  • Chosen competition laureates, diploma holders and winners of the special prizes are obliged to take part in the final concerts of the competition without remuneration.
  • The Management of the Competition reserves a right to permit all the Competition performances and final concerts to be broadcasted by radio and television and to be produced as audio, video, film, CD, tape cassette and vinyl recordings without remuneration to the competitors.
  • 1st and 2nd Rounds results are announced after each round, results of the Final are announced during the Award ceremony.

The Jury of the Competition is in position to award to the winner of each age group the Grand Prix title and prize:

The competitors will be awarded the special prizes:

  • for the best performance of a concerto with orchestra by B. Dvarionas (for violinist or pianist, 500 Eur);
  • Competition Laureates and Diploma Holders are obliged to participate in the Competition Finale Concerts without remuneration or reimbursement of expenses;
  • Prizes and diplomas will be presented during the official closing and Competition finale concert.
  • for the best performance of a piece by B. Dvarionas (for violinist and pianist);
  • for the best performance of a piece by Lithuanian contemporary composer (for violinist and pianist);
  • the youngest participants will be awarded with a tangible prize (participants in the II Round, pianist, and violinist);
  • for the best performance of a piece by Baroque composer (for pianist and violinist)
  • for the best performance of a piece by classical composer (for pianist and violinist)
  • for the best performance of a piece by a contemporary composer (for pianist and violinist)
  • SPECIAL PRIZE “FAVOURITE OF THE AUDIENCE” (for finalist violinist or pianist in C Group, voting at www.15min.lt)

The Balys Dvarionas International Competition Jury will announce Laureates and Diploma holders and will award prizes. No more than a total of 18 Laureate titles in all groups and categories of the Competition can be awarded.

Competition Laureates and Diploma Holders are obliged to participate in the Competition Finale Concerts without remuneration or reimbursement of expenses.
Prizes and diplomas will be presented during the official closing and Competition finale concert.

Participation Fee

A non-refundable Entrance Fee is:

60 EUR for the age group A,

80 EUR for the age group B,

100 EUR for the age group C.

The fee must be paid by February 1, 2020 during the ONLINE application.

Repertoire

The Competition for “A” and “B” Groups will take place in 2 rounds;
the Competition for “C” Group in 3 Rounds (the final Round with orchestral accompaniment).

In Round 1 the competitors must perform at least one Baroque or Classical work,
in Round 2 – at least one Balys Dvarionas composition.
The choice of music for the rest of the program is entirely at the discretion of the competitor within the time allowed for each age group.

The performances for both Round 1 and Round 2 must have the following durations:

Group “A” – from 10 to 20 minutes;
Group “B” – from 15 to 25 minutes;
Group “C” – from 20 to 30 minutes.

  • The Jury reserves the right to interrupt performances which exceed these specified time limits.
  • In Round 1 and Round 2 pianists must perform solo piano works only, violinists solo or with piano accompaniment. All works must be performed from memory.
