Competition Terms
The Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover (JJV Hannover) will be held between October 11th and 27th, 2018. It is a triennial event takes place every three years and is hosted by Stiftung Niedersachsen.
In order to complete the application, you have to send in a DVD recording to Stiftung Niedersachsen (Stiftung Niedersachsen, Joseph Joachim Violin Competition, Sophienstr. 2, 30159 Hannover, GERMANY) which is to contain three tracks (regard the Rules & Regulations).
Age limit
The Participation is open to violinists of all nationalities born between October 27, 1990 and October 13, 2002.

Oct. 22-26: Final Rounds.
Wednesday, October 24: Concerts “The Competition Across the State”.
Saturday, October 27: Prize Winners’ Gala Concert.
Prizes
The competitors of JJV Hannover 2018 will be chosen by an international preselection jury. The choice is based on the online application form and a DVD recording. Stiftung Niedersachsen invites the nominees to Hanover, Germany.
All decisions regarding the advancement of competitors will be made by an international jury based on an evaluation system that is binding for all competition sessions. All jury decisions are final and cannot be appealed.
First Prize – 50 000 €.
The First Prize Winner will receive a Giovanni Battista Guadagnini violin (Parma, ca. 1765) on loan for the duration of three years. Additionally, a CD production with Naxos as well as debut recitals and concerts with internationally renowned orchestras and ensembles will be made available.
Second Prize – 30 000 €.
Third Prize – 20 000 €.
Fourth Prize, Fifth Prize, Sixth Prize – 8 000 €.
Special Prize “Best Interpretation of commissioned work” – 3 000 €.
Audience Award – 2 000 €.
JJV Community Award – 2 000 €.
A duo recital as part of the concert series “The Competition Across the State” will be offered to 10 participants (among them every semifinalist), unless they have been selected for the final rounds – 1 000 €.
Online-Form
Before starting the online process, please make sure you have the following information and documents available:
– your birth certification or similar official document furnishing proof of date and place of birth (ready for upload *.jpg or *.pdf);
– passport picture (ready for upload *.jpg);
– high-quality digital photograph, copyright free (ready for upload *.jpg);
– your addresses between June 5th and October 10th, 2018;
– a list of your musical education;
– two letters of recommendation, written especially for the 2018 JJV Hannover by musicians of acknowledged international standing;
– a list of your personal repertoire – violin concerti, sonatas, virtuose pieces (ready for upload *.doc, *.docx or *.pdf);
– a list of your recent public performances (ready for upload *.doc, *.docx or *.pdf);
– your competition repertoire;
– the DVD repertoire.
Application
Applications must be submitted by May 30, 2018 and include the following:
Part I – DVD recording including three tracks and recording protocol.
Part II – Completed online form and acknowledgement of competition terms.
Receipt of complete applications will be confirmed via email until June 15, 2018.
DVD
In order to complete your application, please record a DVD with three tracks. The recording must be completed without video or audio editings and contain a recording protocol signed by the producer or the applicant’s teacher/professor to confirm this.
Track 3, the violin concerto movement, must be recorded with piano accompaniment. Orchestra accompaniment will not be accepted.
Applications that do not meet these requirements in full may be rejected.
The DVD is to contain three tracks from the following selection:
- One of the following movements Johann Sebastian Bach:
Fuga from Sonata G minor, BWV 1001 or
Fuga from Sonata A minor, BWV 1003 or
Fuga from Sonata C major, BWV 1005.
- One of the Caprices from Niccolò Paganini: 24 Caprices for Solo Violin, op. 1
- The first movement of the following concertos (piano accompaniment only)

Repertoire
The competition consists of five rounds.
All competitors will play the repertory of the first and the second preliminary round. Twelve competitors will reach the semifinal round.
Semifinalists will play a recital containing the commissioned work as well as an encore; the encore must be announced to the audience. Six semifinalists will reach the final rounds.
Each finalist will perform a string quintet (first violin part) as well as a violin concerto with the NDR Radiophilharmonic Orchestra.
October 13-15, PRELIMINARY ROUNDS, First Session
- One of the following works for solo violin:
Johann Sebastian Bach, Sonata BWV 1001, 1003, 1005;
Johann Sebastian Bach, Partita BWV 1002, 1004, 1006.
- One sonata for solo violin from the following selection:

October 15-17, PRELIMINARY ROUNDS, Second Session
- One of the following sonatas for violin and piano:

– A major, op. 12 No. 2;
– E flat major, op. 12 No. 3;
– A minor, op. 23;
– F major, op. 24;
– A major, op. 30 No. 1;

- One complete work of the competitor’s choice for solo violin or for violin and piano.
The maximum length of this session is 35 minutes.
October 18-21, SEMIFINAL ROUND
A recital with a total duration of 60-70 minutes.
The commissioned work (approx. 7 minutes) must be performed, while the remainder of the program can be freely selected and will be evaluated, as well. An encore is expected and should be announced to the audience in English or German.
Concertos for violin and orchestra are not permitted.
Works performed in the preliminary rounds may not be repeated here.

October 18-21, FINAL ROUNDS, First Session
One of the following string quintets:
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
– Quintet in C major, KV 515;
– Quintet in G minor, KV 516;
– Quintet in D major, KV 593;
– Quintet in E flat major, KV 614.
Ludwig van Beethoven
– Quintet in E flat major, op. 4.
Finalists will play the first violin part. The competition will provide the remaining chamber musicians.
October 25-26, FINAL ROUNDS, Second Session
One Concerto for violin and symphony orchestra of your choice. (Subject to final confirmation by the Artistic Director.)
The finalists will perform with the NDR Radiophilharmonie conducted by Andrew Manze.
With exception of the sonatas for violin and piano and the commissioned work, all pieces must be performed from memory.
Preselection
The competitors of the JJV Hannover 2018 will be chosen by an international preselection jury.
All applicants will be notified by July 20, 2018 via email. Approved applicants must confirm their participation in writing and transfer the application fee of € 100 to the bank account of Stiftung Niedersachsen.
Competition rounds
The competition consists of Jive rounds. All competitors will play the repertory of the first and the second preliminary round. Twelve competitors will reach the semifinal round. Semifinalists will play a recital containing the commissioned work as well as an encore; the encore must be announced to the audience. Six semifinalists will reach the final rounds. Each finalist will perform a string quintet (first violin part) as well as a violin concerto with the NDR Radiophilharmonic Orchestra.

Registration
All competitors must register in person at the competition office in Hanover on October 11, 2018.
Order of performance
The order of performance will be determined by a randomized draw that will take place on October 11, 2018 at 3 p.m. All competitors must be present in person at the time of the draw, unless an authorized representative has been sent in their place. The drawn order of performance will remain valid until the end of the competition.
In case of force majeure, the order may be changed. This decision will be made by the jury and only applies to the respective session. The presenter reserves the right to amend the order of performance for the final rounds.
Rehearsals
Starting on October 11, 2018, the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media will open its doors to allow for rehearsal opportunities.
Respected pianists will offer their services as competition accompanists free of charge for competitors. Alternatively, competitors may bring accompanists at their own expense.
There will be one rehearsal for the string quintet and two rehearsals for the violin concerto with the NDR Radiophilharmonic Orchestra.
Travel costs
All competitors are eligible to receive a travel allowance. In order to be reimbursed for your travel costs, please present your travel documents at the competition office in Hanover. The reimbursement amount will be determined on July 20, 2018 based on the cheapest flight or train connection to and from Hanover available in Germany. In exceptional cases, the travel allowance may be transferred in advance.
Accommodations
All competitors will be provided with free accommodations with Hanover host families between October 10 and 28, 2015. If requested, hotel accommodations may be arranged for competitors and accompanying persons at the expense of the competitors.
Concert series
All competitors agree to take part in the concert series “The Competition Across the State” on October 24, 2018 if requested, unless they have been selected to perform for the final rounds.
The prize winners agree to take part in a public Prize Winners’ Gala Concert on October 27, 2018 without compensation. Additionally, they will take part in the subsequent Gala Reception.
Furthermore, prize winners agree to give up to two free concerts for the benefit of the Joseph Joachim International Violin Competition Hannover upon request. In this case, Stiftung Niedersachsen will cover travel and accommodation costs.
Broadcasting rights
As the host of the competition, Stiftung Niedersachsen reserves the right to stream all competition performances free of charge. Additionally, the host reserves the right to produce video and audio recordings of these performances, which may be commercially used and broadcasted at any time and via all available national and international media channels.
Privacy policy
Competitors agree to have their photographs, addresses and further contact details forwarded to third parties. Additionally, these details may appear nationally and internationally in print and on the websites of Stiftung Niedersachsen and the WFIMC at any time.
