Master class by Valeriy Sokolov (violin)

The master class is held within the framework of the VERE MUSIC ACADEMY 2020 program.

Active participation is free of charge. Selection by videos. The video must be recorded after September 1, 2019. The link to YouTube and the application form in MS Excel file can be emailed until November 29 to academy@vere.fund. The number of musicians who will take an active part in the master class will be determined by the teacher.

Ukrainian violinist Valeriy Sokolov is one of the most prominent young musicians of his generation.

When the young man was 18 years old, the famous French director Bruno Montsaingeon made a film about him, The Violin in the Soul, for the ARTE TV channel. Since then, the musician and the legendary director have been linked by many years of friendship and fruitful cooperation. The creative tandem resulted in three films – concerts: Violon dans l’aime (EMI classics, DVD) in 2004, “Sibelius at the Paris Conservatory” with Vladimir Ashkenazi (Euroarts, DVD) in 2009, and “Concerts by Bartok and Tchaikovsky in Zurich” with David Zinman, 2010.

The musician constantly collaborates with the world’s leading orchestras, such as the BBC, the Orchestre de Paris and the Gustav Mahler Orchestra, the Radio France and Bavarian Radio Orchestras (Munich), the NDR Orchestra in Hamburg, the European Chamber Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchester in Zurich, Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Symphony Orchestra, Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Ottawa NAC Orchestra, National Orchestra of France and Bremen Chamber Philharmonic Orchestra.

He performs with the following conductors: Vladimir Ashkenazi, Yannik Neze-Segen, Andris Nelsons, Vasily Petrenko, Yuriy Simonov, Yuri Temirkanov, Peter Undjan and David Tsinman.

The musician performs in the largest concert halls around the world, including the Théâtre du Châtelet (Paris, France), the Prinzregenten Theater (Munich, Germany), the Musikverein (Vienna, Austria), Wigmore Hall (London, UK), Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (New York, USA), at the Champs Elysees and Pleyel Hall (Paris), at Suntory Hall (Tokyo, Japan), the Library of Congress (Washington, USA), the National Arts Center (Seoul) , South Korea), Geneva Opera (Switzerland), Stockholm Concert Hall (Sweden), Severance Hall (Cleveland, USA) and Palais des beaux-arts de Bruxelles (Belgium).

The violinist is always invited to the major world festivals, including Verbier (Switzerland) and Aspen (USA), the French Radio Festival (France) and the Menuhin Festival (Switzerland).

His colleagues on the stage were Piotr Andrzewski, Lisa Batiashvili, Nikita Borisoglebsky, Boris Brovtsin, Alexander Buzlov, Itamar Golan, Leonid Gorokhov, Evgen Izotov, Gerard Cosse, Robbie Lakatosh, Jens Peter Mainz, Misha Maisky, Sasha Mandzhar, Denis Matsuev, Lawrence Power, Vadim Repin, Maxim Risanov, Catherine Stott, Harry Hoffman and many others.

Valeriy was born in 1986 in Kharkiv. He studied at the Kharkiv Specialized Music School (class of associate professor Serhiy Yevdokimov). In 1999, after a successful performance at the Pablo Sarasate International Youth Violin Competition in Pamplona, ​​he received a grant to study at the Yehudi Menuhin School in London (class of Natalia Boyarskaya). After graduating from school he entered the Royal College of Music in London (class of Felix Andrievsky). In 2011 he graduated from the Frankfurt University of Music and Theater and the Academy in Kronberg (class of Anna Chumachenko). Later he graduated from the Vienna Conservatory (class of Boris Kushnir). He took part in master classes by Zakhar Bron, Gidon Kremer, Ruggiero Ricci, Mstislav Rostropovich, Dora Schwarzberg and Andras Schiff.

Winner of the George Enescu International Violin Competition (Bucharest, 2005) – Gold Medal and Special Prize. On the day the violinist received the award, he began working with one of the most famous agencies in Europe, HarrisonParrott – the founder of this agency was his agent. At the end of 2013 he was invited to one of the world’s largest music agencies Askonas Holt.

The musician has signed an exclusive contract with Erato (formerly EMI Classics) for a number of recordings, starting in 2009 with Sonata Enescu No. 3. He recorded many musical masterpieces – in particular, violin concertos by Bartok and Tchaikovsky (EMI), the sextet “Mention of Florence” by Tchaikovsky (Sony), chamber music by Schulhoff (Naxos) and violin concertos by Stankovich (Ukrainian Radio Foundation).

It helps open Ukrainian performers’ access to best educational practices that used to cost them a lot of time, effort and money. But now it is possible to get to master classes of world-famous teachers and musicians without leaving Ukraine. it is also absolutely free.

In addition, the VERE MUSIC ACADEMY program includes one-day master classes from well-known Ukrainian artists who have already received worldwide recognition. When they come to perform in Ukraine, they set aside one day in their schedule to work with Ukrainian students.

The project is implemented in cooperation with the UKR Artists agency.
